Doing Business 2009

» The World Bank’s (WB) recently published Doing Business 2009 report presents qualitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights of 181 world economies. These regulations measure how 10 business areas are affected: (1) starting a business, (2) dealing with licenses, (3) employing workers, (4) registering property, (5) getting credit, (6) protecting investors, (7) paying taxes, (8) trading across borders, (9) enforcing contracts and (10) closing a business. These indicators analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms have worked, where and why. Once all these areas are investigated they arrive at an average indicator where “a high rating indicates that the government has created a propitious regulatory environment for a company’s operation”. Venezuela, Chad, Sao Tome & Principe, Burundi, Congo Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Central African Republic, and the Congo Democratic Republic, raked as the eight nations considered the least appropriate to doing business....

Inflation 2008: The Last Quarter

The elevated inflation rate has become the principle downfall of the 10 years of Hugo Chavez’s administration, since it is not only due to a macroeconomic variable as government officials have led to believe, instead it represents a perverse tax that must be paid by the entire population when paying the diverse goods and services at prices that are higher every day. So far in 2008, the Gov’t has established three different inflation rate projections: 11%, 19% and 27%.....
